Made by Moultrie, this camouflaged, rapid-trigger game camera can take 4-megapixel color pictures by day and video clips at any hour. The camera's rapid response time effectively captures moving game, and its 50-foot infrared flash produces clear pictures, without white spots. The camera operates on six D batteries and boasts a battery life of 150 days. Its airtight, weather-resistant construction includes a mounting strap and an external power port for an optional 12-volt battery. The camera is also equipped with an easy-to-operate LCD display that shows the remaining battery life, the number of pictures taken and remaining, and other information.

The camera has 32 MB of internal memory and the capacity to add up to 4 GB more using an SD card (sold separately). Photos and videos are date- and time-stamped. The product weighs 2.5 pounds and comes with a camera activator and six D batteries.

Moultrie I40 Game Spy Review : Moultrie Game Spy I-40 Infrared Flash Game Camera

I bought a Moultrie game cam last spring and used it all summer/fall. After that much time in the field, I must say that I'm a little disappointed. My negative observations are listed below.

1. Too long of a lag for taking video/pictures. My best example was a grazing cow that showed up center in the game cam, then grazed her way to the right of the screen after 30 seconds. The cow showed up dead center before ever tripping the sensor. A deer walking by is often only seen by a hoof only even when it's at a decent angle, or just leaving the view.

2. Too noisy. I've caught both coyotes and deer that are staring at the camera, then turn and run off, or pace back and forth while looking at it. I can hear the thing "click and buzz" without my hearing aids.

3. Cheap seal. The front cover and side port is covered with a black plastic lid that uses a square formed strip of rubber about 1/8" thick. It's very prone to falling out when your using it, and allowing moisture past the seal. Tough to open the lid in freezing weather. It also lets lots of moisture inside to fog up the camera lens when the weather cools off making for some very poor shots.

4. SD card slot is very deep in the side of the camera housing. About the only way I can get my paws in there to remove the card is with needle nose pliers.

5. Mounting strap is very cheap and broke in half the first good frost. I had replaced it with a "motorcycle type tie down strap". Of course you could buy the Moultrie mounting platform...

I bought this model for it's price as $200.00 was about entry level for an I.R. camera but really expected more...

How Night Vision Works All ATN night vision devices consist of several main parts: an objective lens, an eyepiece, a power supply, and an image intensifier tube (photocathode tube). The devices function by gathering existing ambient light, such as starlight, moonlight, or infrared light, through the front lens. This light, which is made up of photons, goes into the photocathode tube and is converted into electrons. Next, the device amplifies the electrons to a much greater number through an electrical and chemical process, and then hurls them against a phosphorous screen that changes them back into visible light. The image will appear through the eyepiece as a clear, black-and-white or green-hued, amplified re-creation of the scene you were observing. All night vision devices need some light to amplify. That's why all ATN night vision devices have a built-in infrared illuminator (IRI). An IRI essentially throws out a beam of infrared light that is near invisible to the naked eye, but your night vision device can see it. This allows you to use your scope even in total darkness. The IRI works like a flashlight, which is why the distance you can see with it is limited. Although ATN IRIs extend out to 100 yards, the IRI may cover only 40 to 60 percent of the viewing area. How Far Can You See? There are many different variables that can affect the distance you see with a night vision device. First, what are you trying to see? Are you looking for another boat on the water or are you looking for a rabbit in the woods? The larger the object, the easier it is to see. Plus, are you trying to see details (commonly called "recognition range"), or are you just trying to see if something is there? Maybe you will see just the movement, but won't be able to determine 100 percent who are what it is. This is called "detection range." Another variable is lighting conditions. The more ambient light you have, the better and further you will be able to see. You can always see further on a night where the moon and stars are out than if it's cloudy and overcast. ATN typically states that you can tell the difference between a male and female or a dog and a deer at about 75 to 100 yards. However, if you were looking across an open field and there was a half moon out, you could see a barn or a house 500 yards away.
